Two new perspectives on Anne’s story bring the Nazis’ destruction of families into sharp focus – with one unintentionally demonstrating the truth of intergenerational trauma: for survivors, the family itself can be an instrument of violence for the next generation. Not only Anne, but her sister Margot and mother Edith died in Bergen-Belsen in early 1945 her father Otto Frank was the only survivor. Eighty years after the terrible facts – the car pulling up by the canal, the four men in the hallway, one holding a revolver, screaming in German “Wo sind die Juden?” (“Where are the Jews?”) – it is easy to forget that Anne Frank’s story is as much about a family tragedy as about the slight, intense young girl who personifies the Holocaust’s atrocity.
